Steve Applebaum
Fun-Raiser
at South Philly String Band Club
(Philadelphia,
July 14, 2010)
It was a wonderful occasion at the South Philly String Band
Club on July 14, 2010. The club was packed with many friends of Steve
Applebaum, there for this "Fun-Raiser," including many acappella
groups.
We always enjoy attending the South Philly String Band Club's
doo wop acappella events and this was a special night. On this night the
audience and performers honored our friend Steve Applebaum. Steve is a
noted vocal harmony researcher, record collector and enthusiast. Charlie
and Steve have been friends for more than forty years. When Charlie
first went on WXDT/WKDU in 1970, Steve was one of the first listeners and
supporters of Charlie's radio show. Together, Steve and Charlie tracked
down the Castelles (Grand label) and published the first biographical
article on the group. Later, when Charlie moved to WXPN in 1975, Steve
and Charlie produced the show together for a couple years.
As usual, the South Philly String Band Club had great food,
great company and great acappella harmony. Six acappella groups
performed: Quiet Storm, the Norristones, Junior & the Seniors, Street Corner
Five, A Moments Pleasure and the Belairs.
Attendees came from as far away as New York and Maryland.
There were plenty of radio personalities in the audience, too, including
Christine Vitali, Jim Bakay, Tony O, Ron Lockwood, George Frunzi, Mike Carr,
Jack Strong, Lou
Costello, Jimmy DePre, Dennis Burgey, Steve Kurtz and Carl Tancredi (we're
probably missing several more, it's hard to remember everyone). Five
former co-producers and/or cohosts of Charlie's radios shows were also there
(Ron Greilich, Steve Applebaum, Don Leins, Bill Keith and Charles Anderson)
giving the night a reunion atmosphere. But the main focus of the night
was on Steve Applebaum.
In between acappella performances, dee jay Jimmy DePre kept the
music playing for dancing and dinner. Kudos to Carl Tancredi who planned
the night and to Eddie Natale, Bobby Buerklin and the crew from the String
Band Club for their preparations and hard work.
