The
Counts' Chester Brown
Chester Brown, lead of the great 1950's R&B vocal group, the
Counts died Saturday, March 10. Brown founded the Counts in 1953, while
in high school in Indianapolis, IN. The original group consisted of
Chester Brown (lead), Robert Penick (first tenor), Robert Wesley (second
tenor), Robert Young (baritone), and James Lee (bass). The group's
recording career lasted only two years, from 1954 to 1956, but gave us such
great sides as "Darling Dear," "My Dear My Darling," "To Our Love," "From This
Day On," and "Let Me Go Lover". All were recorded for the
Dot label.
Though they stopped recording, the Counts didn't stop singing. As
recently as the 1990's and early 2000's the Counts appeared at UGHA, sounding
much as they did in the 1950's.
Having met the counts at UGHA, we at Classic
Urban Harmony, felt a special loss with the passing of Chester Brown.
The Counts' "To Our Love" was the song that followed the toast at Pam &
Charlie's wedding in 2005.
