When Golden Voice Harry and Cornerstone throw a party, you can
be sure it's a gala event, especially when it celebrates the release of their
long-awaited newest CD. Cornerstone's CD is called "Sharkskin, Silk &
Soul." Recorded with music, the CD is a mix of Soul, Motown, Doo Wop and
Carolina Beach Music, all done in great harmony. The venue, Keenan's
Valley View Inn in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, was crowded to
capacity with over 300 people in attendance.
Cornerstone did two long sets, singing a mix of
their previous favorites and new songs from the CD including an original tune,
"When Two People Fall In Love." For the first set the group
came out sharply dressed in orange jackets with black slacks, changing to
silver jackets for the second set. Older doo wop songs included "Who's
That Knocking," "Oh What A Night," "Your Promise To Be Mine," and "Down By The
Ocean" while soul songs included nice versions of "Working on A Groovy Thing,"
"Lady Soul," "My Girl," "I Can't Help Myself" and "I've Passed this Way
Before." Cornerstone proved they can also sing Carolina Beach music with
outstanding versions of the Tam's "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" (from their new
CD) and the Trammps' "Hold Back The Night." THe group ended with a great
version of "Secret Love" done acappella. Cornerstone has been together for ten
years and they continue to delight their fans. Golden Voice Harry
Schmitt still
has one of the finest lead voices around and Cornerstone's harmony is superb,
thanks to members Bill Diamond, Pat Yocolano and Al Loughead.
The CD is a winner! Ever hear a male group sing
"It's Gonna Take a Miracle"? "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" should get some
play in the Carolinas while the original tune, "When Two People Fall In Love"
is already getting spins on Philly area oldies radio.
