February 4 through February 28, 2015 (West Long Branch, NJ)

Gallery Exhibit, "Asbury Park’s Springwood Avenue Harmony: Celebrating The West Side’s Unique Musical Legacy (1910 - 1970)"

Our highly acclaimed exhibit, "Asbury Park’s Springwood Avenue Harmony: Celebrating The West Side’s Unique Musical Legacy" has been greatly expanded and will open in its complete form in Monmouth University's Pollak Gallery, West Long Branch, NJ, on February 4, 2015.  There'll be a grand opening reception on Wednesday evening, 6 - 8 PM, that's open to the public and FREE.  There'll be refreshments, most likely celebrities, and a chance to see the largest collection of photos and memorabilia ever assembled regarding Asbury Park's black music.

Long before Asbury Park became known for rock music, the city’s African American community rocked on Springwood Avenue.  Between 1910 and 1970, the city’s West Side pioneered the sounds of jazz, gospel and rhythm & blues.  This exhibit explores, chronicles and highlights Asbury Park’s black music scene from Count Basie to Billy Brown, through an impressive collection of rare photos and memorabilia.

Working with the Asbury Park Historical Society and Monmouth University's Center for the Arts, Classic Urban Harmony LLC has curated and spearheaded this comprehensive museum-like exhibit.

The exhibit contains scores of rare photographs plus phonograph records, posters, sheet music, musical instruments and other memorabilia from Asbury Park's West Side.  It contains sections on jazz, gospel. R&B doo wop and soul music.  It also highlights Springwood Avenue's night clubs along with black radio, record labels and record stores.

Fans of R&B, doo wop and gospel vocal harmony groups can be sure these genres will be well represented.  There'll be plenty of items related to Bobby Thomas & the Vibranaires, Lenny Welch & the Mar-keys, the Ray Dots, the Endeavors, the V-Eights, the Uniques, the Darchaes, the Broadways, Billy Brown with the Moments & Ray Goodman & Brown, the Missionary Jubilaires, Golden Harmoniares, United Gospel Singers, Golden Harmonettes, Willing Workers, Carolina Crusaders and many more.

On February 4, 2015, the exhibit opens with a grand reception at Monmouth University's Pollak Gallery on the university's campus at 400 Cedar Avenue, West Long Branch, NJ.  Enter the campus of of Norwood Avenue and follow signs toward Pollak Hall.  There the exhibit will remain viewable for the entire month of February, 2015.
